Introducing DebiCheck

August 21, 2019

What Is DebiCheck?

You may have heard about DebiCheck through the media, from friends, or even from one of our friendly agents. We thought you might have some questions, so here’s a brief explainer.

DebiCheck is a new type of debit order that requires you — the account holder — to authenticate your debit order arrangement directly with your bank. This authentication is done once, at the beginning of the agreement (or again only if the arrangement changes).

Why Do I Have to Do This?

DebiCheck is designed for your protection. It puts you in control of the debit orders processed from your account. If you do not approve the DebiCheck, the debit order cannot be processed — adding an extra layer of security to prevent unauthorised debits.

This is a regulatory requirement from the Payment Association of South Africa (PASA), introduced to help prevent invalid or fraudulent debit orders.?

How Do I Approve a DebiCheck?

The exact approval method depends on your bank, your preferred banking channel, and how the DebiCheck mandate is sent to you. Common options include:

  • Approval via your bank’s mobile app
  • SMS link or push notification
  • USSD code
  • Or directly within your online banking portal

When Must I Approve It?

A DebiCheck mandate must be approved once, either at the start of a new debit order arrangement or whenever the terms change.

If you don’t approve quickly, the request will expire. The expiry time varies depending on how it’s sent:

  • Some expire at 19:00 on the same day,
  • Others the next day,
  • And some within minutes of receipt.

Until DebiCheck is fully phased in, existing NAEDO debit orders may still be processed — even if you haven’t yet approved a DebiCheck.
